migrating from proxmox to freebsd (part 02): plan
so this won’t just be a migration from proxmox to freebsd. there are other plans. for instance: i am running opnsense in a proxmox (kvm) vm. it works but this probably isn’t a very sane way to do it. i’m going to move that to some miniforum nuc (with 2 x 2.5gbit nics built in) and use that as my router. it’s an i3 with 8GB of ram so it should work quite well at doing that job. i may keep the vm just to make sure i have something redundant in case the i3 dies which isn’t beyond the realm of possibility.
i may also try using linux jails as a transition stage from proxmox to native fbsd jails. i’m sure there are going to be hiccups along the way since some of my configurations on some of the containers are probably an administrative nightmare to migrate. the hope is that i can just do a straight migration and let the jail handle the whole kernel calls thing and the jail will be none the wiser. if this actually works then i may just leave the high priority ones like that. luckily for me i used zfs for proxmox and the openzfs team is really adamant about openzfs remaining universal across operating systems so it should just be a nice zfs send and run it after some jail configuration. i’ll find out when i reach that point.
i also want to take a look at ipv6 since i’ll be doing the rest of this nonsense. it would be nice to future proof this stuff to make sure it can run when the oil dries up. myself, like most of the planet, has just sort of tucked ipv6 into a corner because ipv4 is still working and easier to understand.
