creating home assistant os (haos) virtual machine for proxmox
so i want to use home assistant. i had an issue with my logitech doorbell camera giving me endless motion detected notifications in apple homekit and deleted it and had to pull it out of its mount to re-add it whereupon it committed suicide by popping out and slamming onto concrete. so i purchased a reolink battery gen 2 doorbell camera (which can be wired to charge the battery using the existing 1920s doorbell wires).
in proxmox i realized you can’t just download the haos image and add it as an iso to boot and run an installer. instead, for some ungodly reason, haos requires that you get an “official” qcow2 image and use that as a drive in the vm instead.
i never had to install anything in proxmox using this method so i figured i’d point out the fact that you need data storage that actually has “import” as a selection. if you go to whatever you’re storing isos on (i usually just keep isos and container images on the mirrored nvme boot drives since they’re used quite often and i have the space). so i went to the storage that’s called “local” typically and selected imports. then when going to the storage you have the option to upload the qcow2 file for haos.
i set up the vm with the following options using the create vm wizard:
cdrom – do not use any media
guest os – linux 7.x – 2.6
machine – q35
bios – OMVF (UEFI)
efi storage – just pick whatever dataset you store disk images on
pre-enroll keys – unchecked (i think this is necessary but am not sure)
disk – i just created a 1tb disk using virtio block device in case haos needs it
discard – checked (probably not necessary but why not?)
cores – 4 (just a safe bet)
anything else i just left at default
just a note: i’m using zfs for my vdisks so it will just make a zvol and all that fun stuff for me. what it does on your system may vary.
so you should download the official haos qcow2 image. then upload it to whatever storage you have imports set up for. if you go to the storage (typically towards the bottom of the proxmox list on the left) you should see imports and an upload button.
once you’re done creating the vm you have to go to hardware, add, import disk should be an option. choose the storage you put the qcow2 image on, choose the qcow2 image you uploaded, and choose the storage where you put your vdisks. i checked discard too because i’m all about trim passthrough on my ssds. but i’m stupid so i could be wrong in doing that.
once you add it you should see a 32GB disk pop up in the vm. it might be something like disk-2 or whatever.
go to the console. click start. and you should see haos start up. i just got it running and don’t know if ha needs the created disk to do important stuff (maybe video recording?) but it’s there nonetheless. if i don’t need it then i’ll just delete it later. for now it boots and that’s how i did it. you’re welcome.
